What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac Disease is a
digestive disorder that damages the small intestine. If left
untreated, Celiac Disease interferes with absorption of nutrients
from food. The disorder can become very painful. People
who have Celiac Disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten,
which is found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats.
Celiac Disease is considered an autoimmune disease. The only
treatment for Celiac Disease is to follow gluten-free diet -- that
is, to avoid all foods that contain gluten. Eating any gluten
-- no matter how small the amount -- is damaging.
